It’s all about the location
Russian River Valley is a world-class producer of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and our winery is located in the Middle Reach of the Russian River Valley, the heart of which is the illustrious Westside Road neighborhood.
In the summer of 2006, more than 20 acres were replanted as part of maximizing the estate’s amazing terroir. Ultimately, estate production will come from a total of 160 site-specific and brilliant acres, with plantings in each of the ranch’s unique soils and microclimates including: bench land, riverside, and hillside topography.
As much as soil type, climate defines grape growing in the Russian River Valley, where fog and cool overnight temperatures can have a dramatic influence over the vineyards. During summer, fog rolls in from the Pacific Ocean late each afternoon and hangs above the vineyards until the next day’s mid-morning. A welcomed arrival in the hot summer sun, temperatures drop as much as 50ºF, refreshing the grapes and lengthening the growing season, thereby achieving ideal levels of ripeness and maturity. The coolness of the evening allows the fruit to mature slowly and thoroughly, developing full flavors and bright acidity. These flavor profiles serve as the base to the aromatic and exciting wines produced under the HKG label.
